I remember when Olly was born. I had just bought my first “fancy” camera and wanted so badly to take newborn photos of her. I put her in this cute little purple outfit and tried so hard to pose her all snuggled up and sleeping on her belly. Instead, she fell over on her side and it all looked so awkward. I felt defeated.
Later, I realized that it seemed ridiculous to try to attempt something that felt so unnatural to me as a photographer. Why not capture the real and simple moments as they unfold? Simply placing the baby down on a bed and capturing the babies natural movements, tiny toes, little fingers, and all the adorable baby facial expressions. The active babies are just as adorable as the sleeping.
Why is the newborn photoshoot probably one of my favorites to do? Well, besides my love for babies, I like that they are done in the home (the most comfortable setting for new parents), the moments captured are real and authentic, and there isn’t pressure to pose baby in that perfect position in a limited amount of time. Newborns are on their own schedule, which allows me to capture those all too important in between moments. The moments where parents are having a quiet conversation with each other or the baby, working as a team to do a quick outfit change, swiftly changing a diaper, breast/bottle feeding, grabbing snacks for siblings… real life!
While there was a time where newborn photos felt awkward to me, now I look forward to them. I promise nothing but the most comfortable, low anxiety and easiest photoshoot you’ll experience. I can’t wait to capture the littlest new member of your family!
